volume 11:
Boat of Garten
Tracks Less Taken
Tucked within the heart of the Cairngorms, Boat of Garten Golf Club occupies a setting unlike the traditional image of Scottish golf. Here, fairways weave through ancient Caledonian pine forest, bordered by heather, birch and mountain views that stretch across the Highland landscape.
Known affectionately as "The Osprey Village Course", Boat of Garten has been welcoming golfers since 1898. Originally laid out by George Grant, the course was later refined by the legendary James Braid, whose influence can still be seen in the subtle strategy and natural routing that characterise the layout today.
What makes Boat of Garten distinctive is the way golf feels woven into the landscape rather than imposed upon it. The fairways occupy natural clearings between towering Scots pines, while purple heather frames many of the holes. There are few artificial features and little sense that the course has been forced into place. Instead, the routing follows the contours of the land, creating a golfing experience that feels both peaceful and quietly demanding.
Course Reel
The surrounding Cairngorm mountains provide a constant backdrop, yet it is often the silence that leaves the strongest impression. Away from the bustle of Scotland's more famous golfing destinations, Boat of Garten offers a slower rhythm. The calls of birds replace the sound of traffic. Pine needles soften the woodland floor. The changing Highland seasons transform the colours of the course throughout the year.
While not a links, the course embodies many of the qualities that define Scottish golf at its best. Strategic rather than overpowering. Natural rather than manufactured. Memorable because of its setting rather than its scorecard.
For many golfers, Boat of Garten becomes an unexpected highlight of a Highland golfing journey. A course that sits quietly among the forests of the Cairngorms, content to let the landscape do the talking.
