volume 12:
Kinghorn
Tracks Less Taken
Driving north from Edinburgh, following the coastline towards courses such as Lundin Links and Dumbarnie, it is easy to pass Kinghorn Golf Club without fully appreciating what lies above Pettycur Bay.
Set high on the hillside overlooking the Firth of Forth, Kinghorn is one of the most distinctive and unconventional courses in Fife. Originally shaped by Old Tom Morris and later refined by Willie Fernie, it occupies a dramatic piece of ground where the landscape dictates almost every shot.
There is little uniformity here. Fairways twist and climb across steep slopes. Dry stone walls cut through the course. Gorse and fields of rapeseed frame the routing during the summer months. Elevated tees reveal sweeping views across the water before demanding shots back into the folds and contours of the hillside.
What makes Kinghorn memorable is its refusal to conform. This is not a course built upon broad expanses of linksland or gentle terrain. Instead, golfers are presented with dramatic elevation changes, awkward stances, steep runoffs and firm, fast conditions that reward imagination as much as execution
Course Reel
During the height of summer, the course can become particularly testing. Fairways run hard beneath the ball, approaches release unpredictably and slopes that appear harmless from a distance suddenly become part of the strategy. Success here often comes from accepting what the land gives you rather than fighting against it.
There is a rugged honesty to Kinghorn. The routing follows the natural ground, embracing its quirks rather than smoothing them away. The result is a course full of character, where no two holes feel quite the same and where local knowledge remains a valuable advantage.
While many golfers pass by on their way to Fife's more celebrated venues, those who stop at Kinghorn are rewarded with something increasingly rare: a golf course that remains entirely shaped by the land beneath it.
Kinghorn may not be the longest course in Scotland, but it remains one of the most memorable. A place where the contours, conditions and coastline combine to create a true test of golfing mettle.
